CUMNOR BACK TO THE TOP OF THE LEAGUE IN GREAT STYLE

CUMNOR MINORS V CHOLSEY 28TH NOV 2007 AT THE CLOSES 12:00

For the first time this season, less than ideal weather conditions greeted the arrival of Cholsey. Cholsey have been going well and a victory was necessary to keep ahead of Cholsey and keep up with the leading teams.
Before the game, Dave, Wayne and Kev took the boys into the changing rooms for a pre-match talk. It seemed to work as Cumnor started the game looking very impressive. Cumnor took the game to Cholsey. Luke ,Fraser and Harri took a firm grip of midfield. With Ryan covering the right wing and Biggy and Freddie linking up well it was only a matter of time before Cumnor took the lead.
Biggy broke through the defence after some nice build up. As the goalie narrowed the angle, Biggy put the ball over his head into the back of the net. It was 1-0. Soon afterwards Shaun and Ryan linked up well on the right side and forced a corner. The corner was fired in but the goalie saved well. Freddie broke on the right but was pulled back. Harri lined up the free kick. He put it into the box and with a lovely touch Fraser slipped it into the net. It was 2-0 to Cumnor.
Cholsey started to find their feet and were looking dangerous. Alex had to be at his best to race across the field and make a great interception. Ollie had to be at his best against a lively winger. Henry always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Robbie had to be sharp of his line to keep the score at 2-0. Cholsey split the Cumnor defence and their attacker raced forward with only Robbie to beat. Robbie raced out and narrowed the angle. He did enough to force him to fire wide.
The first half finished 2-0.
In the second half, Cholsey with the wind behind were looking very dangerous. Mark made some very important interceptions. When Cumnor did move forward, their passing was excellent. Luke was starting to stop the Cholsey attacks and start some moves with great passing. Shaun, moved to a more attacking position, was proving annoying to the Cholsey defenders with some great runs. The third goal came from some great passing. Fraser made a great tackle. Luke found Biggy. Biggy found Freddie who raced into the box and slipped it into the net. It was 3-0. Harri and Mark were linking up well on the other side and causing all sort of problems to Cholsey.
Robbie made a great run and nearly scored after going from one end of the park to the other.
Henry made a great clearance. Shaun raced forward and made a great run. As he approached the goalie, Shaun hit a great shot into the back of the net. It was 4-0.
At the other end, Cholsey were not giving up. With a great move, Cholsey looked like they would score. Tim saw the approaching danger and made a great interception. Sam was brought on to cut out any danger on the left and did a great job.
The final whistle went and it ended 4-0 to Cumnor.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Captain LUKE THORNE.

Next week, we leave the bread and butter of the League behind and take part in the glamour of the League Cup. How can we forget the great run of last year which saw us lose to Radley in a great final. Summertown are visiting the Closes. It should be a great game as anything can happen in the cup.

ARDINGTON BEAT CUMNOR

CUMNOR MINORS V ARDINGTON 14TH OCTOBER 2007 12:00 AT THE CLOSES.

Cumnor were hoping to keep their 100% home record intact on a lovely Sunday morning. The sun was shining.
The game started and it looked to be only a matter of time before Cumnor took the lead. Cumnor were attacking at ease. Biggy and Freddie came close to scoring. Shaun was looking very sharp on the left. Ben back after a couple of weeks was adjusting to the pace.
Ardington were starting to look dangerous and with a breakaway took the lead. They attacked down the left. Robbie came out to narrow the angle. The Ardington player passed the ball into the box. Their striker came racing in to fire the ball into the net. It was 1-0.
Cumnor replied immediately. Henry cut off an attack. He found Alex. The ball came to Luke. He raced forward but was tackled and the ball went for a corner. Harri fired in the corner and Freddie smashed the ball into the net. It was 1-1. Cumnor came close with a fantastic shot from Fraser.
At the other end, Mark was solely responsible for keeping the score at 1-1. He made some great stops. One ball was heading for the net but Mark managed to push it over the bar. With seconds to go, Ardington made it 2-1 with a well worked goal.
The second half saw Ardington controlling the game. Cumnor seemed to lack any great fight and Ardington seemed to want to win the game more. Cumnor had their moments. Harri fired over the bar. Biggy had some good runs. Shaun tried very hard to get the side moving. Fraser fought for every ball - sometimes without a lot of help from his teammates. Tim made a good save but it was not surprising when Ardington made it 3-1. Dave brought on Ollie, Sam and Ryan but the game was slipping away. Robbie, Henry, Alex and Mark were doing well but they had no protection. With minutes to go, Ardington got a penalty. Tim had no chance. It was 4-1. The game finished.

CUMNOR MINORS 1 ARDINGTON 4

MAN OF THE MATCH: FRASER SHIELDS.

Ardington deserved to win. They were first to the ball and Cumnor offered little opposition at times in the second half. The pressure seems to be increasing on the coaching staff. Dave, Wayne and Kev will have to turn the lads around for the next game against Cholsey or else! Supposedly, Jose Mourinho is keeping an eye on the situation. Rumours that he was wined and dined by the Cumnor Minors Board at the Vine on Saturday night are not true.

CUMNOR BACK TO WINNING WAYS.

QUARRY V CUMNOR MINORS 7TH OCTOBER 2007 10:30

Today Cumnor visited Quarry who boasted a very skillful squad who had not quite got into gear this season. Quarry started the brighter team with some sweeping moves. Ollie playing a central role in defence made sure he was first to any ball with some great interceptions. Henry stopped a Quarry attack with a last gasp tackle. Cumnor were starting to pass the ball and were starting to look more dangerous. However it was Quarry who came closer with a through ball which Robbie saved with great confidence. Shaun playing at right back was finding his natural inclination to attack overridden by his Dad telling him to stay in defence.
Fraser and Luke were now looking to start some attacking moves. Fraser had a shot which went just wide. Luke was using his strength to push forward. Luke found Biggy who raced onto the ball. With great control, he slipped it past the goalie to make it 1-0. With a great move Cumnor raced forward. Shaun found Fraser. He passed to Freddie. With one touch he passed to Ryan. Ryan raced forward but shot just past. Mark, who looks more assured with every game, broke up a Quarry attack. He found Harri who raced forward. The ball was slipped to Biggy. Biggy yet again fired the ball past the Quarry goalkeeper. What a great goal. With minutes to go in the first half, Luke passed to Harri. Harri from 20 yards fired the ball into the net. 3-0 to Cumnor.
In the last dying seconds of the half, Quarry fired in a great shot. It just dropped over the bar. Dave B was sure the ball went into the net. Someone suggested that Dave should make an appointment at the opticians. This seemed an even better idea after Dave started giving the half time team talk to Quarry rather than Cumnor.
After some great football in the first half, Quarry came out looking to get back in the game. A delightful move by Quarry, opened up the Cumnor defence. Alex, showing great composure, broke up the move with great vision. Great play. Quarry were not to be outdone. Another move saw a great goal by Quarry. Suddenly Cumnor were under pressure. With another attack, it should have been 3-2 but Tim came out quickly to narrow the angle and it was pushed wide.
Cumnor attacked again. Luke made a great run. He passed to Fraser. Fraser threw the ball into the box. It was handled by the Quarry defender. It was a penalty. Biggy raced to get the ball. He wanted his hat-trick. He put the ball into the corner. Relief for Cumnor. Shaun passed to Freddie. Freddie raced forward and slipped it into the net. 5-1 to Cumnor. Sam made a great sliding tackle to stop a Quarry move. In the last minutes, Quarry scored another great goal. Before the end, Neil, our linesman, when trying to control the ball, waved his flag with great flowing movements. The referee had never seen anything like it. Totally confused, the referee gave five penalties and sent off most of the Quarry and Cumnor side. Fortunately the referee regained his control and Neil calmed down.
The game finished.

MAN OF THE MATCH: DAN BIGDEN.

The boys wore their new away strip for the first time. They looked great. All were very happy apart from all the Mums and Neil G. They were very concerned about keeping the tops white after being washed. Neil had some useful tips which all the Mums greatly appreciated.

CUMNOR HIT BY LAST MINUTE GOAL

DIDCOT V CUMNOR MINORS 30TH SEPT 2007 AT DIDCOT.

It was a clash that both teams were looking forward to. Cumnor had travelled down with a very strong squad. Confidence was high. The game started with end to end football. Both sides were attacking but the defences were looking strong. The Didcot goalie was the first called into action as he made a great save from Biggy. Henry had to be sharp as he cut off a through ball with a great interception. Mark had probably the most difficult task as he was marking Didcot's tricky winger, Alex. But Mark was up for the job and made sure that Alex had one of his quieter days. Our Alex on the other side of the park was using his speed to start attacks from the back.
Shaun and Freddie were linking up well and were starting to open up the defence. Shaun came very close with a shot which just dipped by the post. On the other side, Fraser and Luke were causing all sorts of problems and were looking very dangerous. Harri tried a shot which dipped past. Robbie was going for every ball and getting every ball. He was proving impossible to get past.
With minutes to go in the first half, disaster struck. A through ball was put over our defence. The Didcot attacker got there first and he fired the ball past Tim. Tim managed to get his hand to the ball but could not keep it out.
Cumnor tried to reply straight away but they ran out of time.
Dave B gave his half time talk. It had its desired effect as we probably saw the best performance that we have ever seen from the blues of Cumnor.
Cumnor attacked relentlessly. Fraser and Luke were immense. Shaun gathered the ball in midfield. He found Luke. Luke slipped the ball to Fraser. Fraser then ran for about 30 yards. Avoiding desperate Didcot tackles, he raced into the box. He fired in a great ball but the goalie made a great save. Robbie fired the ball to Ryan. Ryan raced down the wing and put in a great cross. The goalie came out but missed the ball. The ball ran tantalizingly along the 6 yard line but Harri just came in to late. Freddie went on a great run and found Biggy. Biggy turned and raced into the penalty box. A shot was pushed by for a corner. Shaun was injured in a tackle but shrugged off any attempt to take him off the park to treat his injury.
Ollie made a great saving tackle when Didcot managed to get out of their half.
Shaun and Biggy won the ball in midfield. It was passed to Freddie. Freddie went on a great run. He rounded a couple of players. With only Sam to beat Freddie slipped the ball past Sam but was catapulted into the air by the last gasp tackle from Sam. The referee blew for a free kick. Harri took the free kick and tried to place it into the corner. The goalie saved well.
With 8 minutes to go the Didcot goalie stepped out his box and a freekick was awarded against him. This time Biggy took the free kick. I think placing the ball was not going to be an option for Biggy. He slammed the ball with great force and it was tipped onto the bar. It seemed to be in orbit for a long time but when it came back down Harri, fearlessly, threw himself at the ball and headed it into the net. What a goal! Harri stayed down injured but dragged himself back up to continue the game.
Cumnor were looking good. Henry found Luke with a ball of great vision. Luke raced forward and found Ryan but he was tackled. With minutes to go, a corner was given to Didcot. The corner landed in the box. No one could clear the ball and it was fired past Tim. Tim had no chance. Still Cumnor came forward. Robbie broke up an attack. He then raced forward like a man possessed. He found Shaun. The ball was pushed out for a throw-in. Was this going to be the last kick of the ball? It was. The referee blew his whistle.
What a game. First class football from two great teams. Well done both sides.

Didcot 2 Cumnor Minors 1

Men of the Match: Everyone.

As Dave pulled the boys in for his after match talk the boys seemed dejected. Harri's chin now was double the size after his knock. It could be easy to blame a Didcot foot for his injury. But it was Freddie's head that caused it --ps don't tell Harri. As Harri has all the looks in the Betteridge family it's not a good day for the B's.
Dave, quite rightly, told the boys how well they had done. It does show that we are more than a match for any Oxford Mail team. It is going to be an exciting season! This is an even better side than the title winning side of 2005.
