CUMNOR WIN FINAL
Cumnors last chance of silverware was against Didcot in the Oxford Mail Cup Final. A great season was coming to an end. Both sides narrowly missed out on the league.
Cumnor suffered an early blow with the news that Mark was suffering from flu. Dave, Wayne and Kev had to make some big decisions. It was decided to move Shaun into defence alongside Kieran. Luckily for Cumnor, Kieran is getting used to playing with a different partner every week. Both sides looked nervous and it showed in their early play. Fraser and Freddie linked up on the right hand side to create an opening. Biggy moved onto the through ball but the ball was deflected for a corner. Harri raced over to take the corner. He swung in a deep corner. It was cleared by the Didcot defence. It was cleared only to Ben. He slipped the ball to Bradley but the ball was cleared. At the other end, Robbie had to show great handling to stop a dangerous move. Alex was a match for any Didcot attacker. As he broke up one attack, he dragged the ball past an opposing player. He found Luke. He carried the ball over the halfway line. The ball was slipped through to Bradley. He shrugged of the Didcot attacker. He was one to one with the Didcot goalie. He fired in a great shot but the goalie saved well. Kieran had to be sharp to cover a Didcot attack but he managed to clear the ball for a throw in.
A clearance from Shaun found Fraser who slipped the ball to Biggy. A great touch from Biggy left the defender standing. He was about to shoot but was tackled and the ball was cleared. The Cumnor support shouted for the free kick but the referee played on.
Half time approached and Didcot were controlling the game. The ball was thrown in to the Cumnor penalty box. Cumnor could not clear. The Didcot attacker controlled the ball and gave Robbie no chance with a great shot. It was 1-0 to Didcot. The referee blew for half time.
The second half started with Cumnor on the attack. The ball was flown into the Didcot penalty box. Ben headered the ball to Harri who flipped the ball with his head into the back of the net . What a goal! It was 1-1. The second half had alot of midfield action. Robbie made his presence felt with some great tackles. Harri kept making tackle after tackle to stop every attack. Bradley and Biggy worked tirelessly up front but it was starting to look like a stalemate.
Didcot attacked down the right hand side. The ball bounced to a Didcot attacker. He fired a great shot to the top corner of the net. Tim rose to push the ball for a corner. What a save! Another Didcot attack saw Freddie cut off a through pass and cleared the danger. The referee looked at his watch and blew for full time. It was extra time.
This is when motivational speaches are required from the coaching staff. Dave and Wayne encouraged the boys to dig deep and find the determination keep going. The boys waited expectantly for Kev to give his words of encouragement. But no-one could see him. Then Harri spotted his Dad in the queue for chips. What terrible timing! As Kev came over to give his advice, he thought that the chips could do with more salt.
Cumnor went on the offensive. Fraser and Ben worked the ball well. They found Biggy. He raced away from the defender. As he approached the goalkeeper he fired a rocket into the back of the net. It was 2-1.
The second half started with Didcot looking for the equaliser. The ball came into the Cumnor box. It was cleared but only to a Didcot payer. He controlled the ball and fired it into the net. Tim catapulted himself into the air and pushed the ball over the bar. What an amazing save. Didcot could not believe it. Straight away Cumnor raced up to the other end. Luke released Biggy who hit an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. It was 3-1.
The referee blew for full time.
CUMNOR ARE CHAMPIONS.
CUMNOR MINORS 3 DIDCOT 1
MAN OF THE MATCH: HARRI.
Well done Cumnor. I do think that Cumnor deserved something out of the season. We have given the Oxford Mail League a boost by getting to the B and B Cup Final and probably suffered due to a fixture congestion.
PLAYER PROFILES:
TIM: SAVED HIS BEST PERFORMANCES FOR THE BIG GAMES. WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT SOMEONE OTHER THAN EVERTON BUT HIS DAD WON'T ALLOW HIM.
ROBBIE: HAS BEEN FANTASTIC BETWEEN THE STICKS BUT ALSO LOOKS BRILLIANT AS AN OUTFIELD PLAYER. WOULD LIKE TO SUPPORT SOMEONE ELSE THAN CHELSEA BUT HIS DAD WON'T ALLOW HIM.
MARK: ANOTHER GREAT SEASON. MISSED OUT ON THE CUP FINAL DUE TO ILLNESS. ALWAYS GIVES 100%.
KIERAN: FIRST SEASON. A GREAT PLAYER WHO ONLY GOT BETTER DURING THE SEASON. DESERVED PLAYER OF THE SEASON[X2]
FREDDIE: SLIPPED INTO DEFENCE WITH EASE. A GREAT SEASON.
ALEX: PROBABLY THE QUICKEST PLAYER IN THE TEAM. HOW MANY TIMES HAS ALEX MADE A LAST MINUTE TACKLE TO SAVE THE SIDE. WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO SUPPORT SOMEONE ELSE THAN HULL CITY BUT HIS DAD WON'T ALLOW HIM.
BEN: BEN HAS TOUGHENED UP THIS YEAR. HE TACKLES LIKE ANDY MURRAY PLAYS TENNIS. DOES NOT GIVE UP AND WAS POSSIBLY OUR BEST PLAYER OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF GAMES.
HARRI: HAS SHOWN THAT FOOTBALL SKILLS ARE NOT GENETIC. A GREAT SEASON AND A GREAT FINAL. TODAY WAS THE BEST I HAVE SEEN HARRI PLAY.
LUKE: CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS. CUMNOR WITHOUT LUKE IS ONLY HALF A TEAM. RUNS HIMSELF INTO THE GROUND EVERY WEEK. IS HAPPY TO SUPPORT MANCHESTER UNITED.
FRASER: THE ONLY AYR UNITED SUPPORTER IN CIVILISATION. ALWAYS THE FIRST PERSON ON THE TEAM SHEET. WHAT A PLAYER!
NATHAN: DID NOT COME ON IN THE CUP FINAL BUT HAS ADAPTED WELL TO LIFE IN CUMNOR. HE HAS A GREAT TOUCH.
SHAUN: THE ONLY LIVERPOOL SUPPORTER WHO TALKS NORMALLY. A GREAT SEASON WITH SOME GREAT GOALS. A STAND OUT IN MANY A GAME.
BRADLEY: AN INSPIRATION UP FRONT. HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY SOMETIMES WITHOUT ANY SUPPORT. NEVER LEAVES THE OPPOSING DEFENDERS ALONE.
BIGGY: A FANTASTIC CENTRE FORWARD WITH A GREAT TOUCH. SCORES MANY IMPORTANT GOALS.

PRESENTATION NIGHT
Excitement as the big social event of the year took place.
The votes were counted and only Dave knew the results. They were kept in a sealed envelope.
PLAYER'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
SECOND PLACE: BRADLEY
WINNER: KIERAN
PARENT'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
SECOND PLACE: FREDDIE
WINNER: KIERAN
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: FREDDIE
Well done Kieran for a fantastic season. To win both awards is a fantastic achievement but fully deserved.
All the boys have had a fantastic season What a year! The B and B Cup run took us to new challenges and to new heights. Amazing games against Didcot, Aylesbury and Bourne End which pushed the boys to even greater levels. Who can forget Bradley's last minute winner against Aylesbury! or Lukes's winner against Bourne End.
Luckily we have one more game which can make Cumnor never forget the 2008-2009 season. Next week we play Didcot in the Oxford Mail Cup final. A win would give Cumnor the trophy they deserve. Didcot are a great side so it should be a classic.
At the end of the presentation night, there was a dads v boys game. It was good to see some of the Dads play as they are always boasting that they were great players in their youth.
How did the Dad's play:
Wayne: Has retired from semi professional football-now we know why. Deceptively slow.
Kev: Poor- but to be expected as he has never played the game before. Someone said that they had seen milk turn faster.
Colin: Played during the game as left winger. Blamed shoes for pathetic performance. Constantly made to look bad by black and white dog.
Stuart: Only one answer to seeing the ball. Kicking the ball in any direction as hard as he could. Obviously it is the Notts [Nottingham] Forest way.
Dave: Surprisingly showed some good touches. Scored a great goal and came close with another. When Mark saw his Dad score, he commented that this would be mentioned at every family get together for the next 20 years.

SUPER SUNDAY SEES ARDINGTON WIN TITLE.
Last Sunday was probably the most exciting finish to a season for many a year. Cumnor, Radley or Ardington could win the league with Didcot just slipping out of contention last week. It was fitting that the 4 best teams in the league were to play with the title at stake.
Cumnor looked more nervous than Ardington and started poorly. Robbie had to be quick to stop a loose ball on the right hand side. It was no surprise when Ardington took the lead with a great headed ball from a corner. Robbie got a hand to it but the ball squeezed in to the net. Cumnor were on the back foot. Mark made a great intervention on the left hand side as Cumnor were under pressure.
A clearance from Kieran found Shaun. He fired a great pass to Fraser who managed to force a corner. The corner was cleared and Ardington gained another corner. Again slack marking saw another great header put Ardington 2 up. Cumnor looked dead and buried. As the 1st half drew to a close, Cumnor attacked. A cross from Fraser found Harri. He fired the ball into the back of the net with a great strike. It was 2-1 and the referee blew the whistle for the end of the first half.
Cumnor moved Biggy up front for the second half and looked a different side. Luke found his passing boots. He slipped the ball to Biggy. Biggy shot a great shot heading to the back of the net. The Ardington goalie made a great save. Ben, having a fantastic game, won the ball in midfield. He found Bradley. He moved forward and slipped the ball to Biggy. He shot again but yet again it was saved.
Kieran started another move. He moved forward and slipped the ball to Fraser. A Fraser shot was forced for a corner. Harri took the corner and it was cleared out to Freddie. He controlled the ball and slammed it towards the back of the net. Biggy flicked the ball on and the goalie saved.
Luke hit another great shot but it was cleared. It landed with Biggy. He controlled the ball and hit a great shot into the back of the net. What a goal!
It was 2-2.
Cumnor went looking for the all important 3rd goal. Alex was having a great game at the back. The Ardington strikers thought they were fast but Alex was faster. Alex made a great clearance and Ben slipped the ball into the box. Bradley shot just past.
Tim made a great stop that prevented an Ardington winner.
The referee looked at the whistle and blew for full time. What a great game. A credit to both sides. All the supporters wanted the game to last for ever.
