Cumnor had two first choice players unavailable. Therefore the team was rearranged at the last minute.
Cumnor started well and took an early lead. A through ball from Shaun allowed Freddie to shrug off the attentions of Robbie. He then slipped the ball past the goalie. It was 1-0. Cumnor had the upper hand in the early parts of the game. Fraser made a great run and crossed the ball. Bradley just failed to connect. Luke and Joe linked up well on the right hand side. Joe managed to make space for himself in the penalty box but his shot went wide. Adam released Bradley but he was tackled well. Wantage started to find a foothold in the game. Wrighty made a great tackle to force the ball out for a corner. The ball was crossed and Robbie managed to punch clear. The ball was met by a Wantage player but he pushed it wide. Freddie and Bradley came close but could not find the finishing touch. The first half finished 1-0.
The second half saw Wantage start better. Jordi made some great tackles on the right hand side. Wantage had a couple of corners which were very difficult to defend but Robbie made some great punches.
Wantage were soon on level terms. A fine goal by Anthony Martin gave Robbie no chance.
The game was opening up. Wantage were trying to stretch Cumnor on the left. I lost count of the number of times that Declan made great runs to stop the Wantage attacker. He covered well.
Fraser and Luke were getting a hold of midfield and were breaking up the right hand side. A couple of crosses came in from Fraser but the goalie saved well. Joe was his usual industrious self-cutting balls out and starting moves. One such move saw Shaun "pass" the ball to Fraser. He raced up the right hand side and Freddie had left his marker to slip the ball into the net.
Cumnor were in control but could not add to the lead.
Wantage started to push forward and put Cumnor under pressure. A great run from Jack saw him move into the box leaving behind the defence. As he was about to pull the trigger, Kieren arrived from nowhere to make the tackle of the game. What a tackle.
With minutes to go Wantage equalised with a shot which took a deflection.
It was 2-2.
The referee blew his whistle.
WANTAGE 2 CUMNOR MINORS 2
What a great game. End to end football with some crunching tackles. Both sides had chances to win. It was a enthralling game to watch and indicates how strong the Oxford Mail League is.
I think when we get to the end of the season both sides won't be far away from the title.
